Rather than spending lots of money on serious problems in the future, why not take care of your furnace in little but effective ways! Here are some easy, DIY maintenance tips that you can surely do at home to protect your heating equipment. Make sure that the power is off. Before checking the parts of your electric furnace, you have to prioritize your safety before you get your hands on the device. Remove the combustion door. Then, flip the electrical power switch to ‘Off.’ You can do this by removing the combustion chamber door by lifting and pulling it out. Later on, remove the burner cover. Most units have this part. This can be found in places with two screws. Check the burner flames. Remember, flames should be even and blue. First, turn the power switch on and activate the burners by turning up your thermostat. You are now ready to inspect the burner flames. If blue flames indicate a well-performing burner, yellow flames indicate that it contains dirt and should be cleaned. Vacuum the burners. The power switch must be turned off again. The gas should also be shut off by giving the value one-quarter turn. Use a 20 inches length tape with 1/2 inch width to your vacuum hose. Then, vacuum any traces of dust. You can use a flashlight to look into signs of soot, one of the reasons for poor combustion. Lift the lower door (blower door) and vacuum the blower compartment. Remove the blower to clean it. To do this, you have to remove the bolts that secure the blower, also called the squirrel cage. Some units may have a control panel in front of the blower. This may contain two screws that should be loosened. Then, remove the two bolts that hold the blower, and gently lift it out.
