When we put an addition onto our house last summer, we had no idea what kind of a problem it was going to end up being for us.
Don’t get me wrong; we love the way it looks and we are enjoying all of the extra space that we have now. But what we didn’t know was the way that the extra space was going to affect our HVAC system. I feel like our contractor should have warned us about the effects of the extra space on our HVAC system’s effectiveness. Now that we have all of this extra room that needs heating and cooling, our existing HVAC unit just isn’t able to handle it most of the time. When the thermostat is set to heating, the furnace runs almost constantly. Yet, the new two story great room never feels warm enough to me. We have a fireplace in there too, and I’m really glad that we added the fireplace along with the extra space. I wasn’t planning on using the gas fireplace nearly as much as we have been, but with the cold temperatures this winter, we have had to! Since the heating system isn’t keeping the place warm enough for our liking, we needed an extra source of heating for the area. I talked to our local HVAC company about the problem and they said that we are probably going to have to put in an upgrade to our HVAC system if we want to correct the heating and cooling problems that we have now. We are never going to be done paying for all of this stuff!
