Adding a security system after robbery

I grew up in a grape and dairy farming community in the northeast.

During my childhood, I don’t remember anyone ever locking their homes or cars.

I don’t think we ever worried about crime! The local businesses didn’t have surveillance cameras. The safety of the local area has gradually diminished over the years. Just two years ago, there was a bunch of break-ins over the summer. The intruders broke into houses during the middle of the day while people were at work. They made off with electronics, jewelry, cash and anything of value that they were able to grab and carry. My house was hit on a Wednesday afternoon. I am so grateful that no one was inside the home at the time. My daughter had just turned thirteen, and we were just starting to allow her to be there by herself. After the robbery, my family just didn’t feel comfortable in the house. We upgraded the door locks but this didn’t make us guess totally secure. We eventually invested in a home security system. It is a wireless system with motion and window sensors, automated door locks and alarms and surveillance cameras. When an exterior door or window is accessed, there is a set amount of time for the code to be punched into the control panel before the alarm sounds. A security monitoring company then calls my husband or I and requires the password. If we don’t supply the proper password, the authorities are notified and sent. I am convinced that just the presence of signs indicating that our house is protected by a security plan will keep most intruders away. My family definitely sleeps better knowing that our house is locked up. We know that no one can enter without us being instantly alerted.
