Should I Replace My AC System or Keep Repairing It?

My AC unit has been on the brink of breaking down for several years now.

I do what I can by hiring an HVAC professional every 6 months for general servicing and replacing my air filters often, but it’s not getting any better.

The HVAC professional always tells me that I should consider having the AC system replaced completely, but I don’t know what to do. I know he’s a professional, but I don’t want to be taken advantage of. I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a new AC system if I don’t have to, and I assume the HVAC professional makes a commission off of my purchase. The last time he was servicing my HVAC system though, I asked him why he thought I needed to have it replaced rather than repaired. He told me that I’d been having it repaired for years now and that it was costing me more. If I continued to have it serviced, the cost would add up to the price of a new AC system anyway, but I still wouldn’t have a new one. The HVAC professionals had done everything they could to repair it, but there was no clear solution. They were basically buying time for my AC system, but it would eventually go out, whether I liked it or not. I understood what he was saying, even though I didn’t like it. I finally pulled the trigger and installed a new AC system, and I’m hoping my HVAC professional was right.
