Quick tips for reigning in cooling costs in the summer

I look outside to see all sorts of green out there.

And it’s only just getting started.

The air conditioner has even kicked on a few times during the middle of the day. Spring is here and it’s a wonderful time of year in this region. However, I also hate to say goodbye to winter. That is the time of year that is absent of any type of deep heat and humidity. It’s full of blue sky and mild temps. The heat pump heating will kick on now and again during the winter. But not all that often. The real load on the heat pump comes during the summer. And this is the time of year to get active about saving on the cooling cost during the heat and humidity of summer. It really isn’t to involved but it does take a bit of proactive movement. Once I have the air conditioner tune-up, I’m ready to implement the rest of the HVAC utility savings strategy. I start by making sure the house still has a very tight seal. That means checking all the weather stripping for sun or heat damage and replacing where necessary. The entrances and exits can be the worst HVAC treated air leaks in a house. Then, I have the solar drapes cleaned and ready to block the direct sunlight heating. This is another source of sneaky heat production in the summer. But ultimately, it comes down to making sure the thermostat is programmed to allow the temperature inside to rise with the outside temps. Without this, savings on cooling your house is hard to achieve.
