I remember the day our boss told us that they would be closing the office due to the pandemic.
This was not good news. And not just because I would greatly miss the zone controlled HVAC. Although, I really did miss it initially. No, I was concerned simply because closing the office wasn’t going to be the only change. I knew there would be layoffs and I was hoping I would be one of the ones who were kept on to work from their own air conditioning. Fortunately for me, that was the way it turned out. But at first, it was quite the difficult transition to working from home. First, it was tough to find a place that was quiet and I could focus. The kids were learning remotely due to the pandemic so we were all sharing the air conditioning safety of home. But I finally found a spot. However, that spot was sort of storage room in our house. It got this designation because it was at the end of the house and got direct sun all day. It was the warmest room in the house for sure. That’d be great if we didn’t live where the air conditioning is on for like 8 months out of the year. Still, I was able to really get into my work. Ironically, my work quality and quantity jumped. And the bosses noticed. So when the offices reopened, I chose to stay at home and continue to work remotely. However, I did have the HVAC company come in and install a ductless mini split in my new home office.
