Simple building automation that you may not know about

When you think of building automation you probably envision a huge computer operated system that is found in large buildings.

Did you know that you have a simple form of building automation in your home right now? Your thermostat, programmable or not is a simple form of building automation.

It controls the furnace or air conditioners and tells it when to run and when to shut off. You don’t have to do anything except set the temperature to your liking and it takes care of the rest. If you have purchased a Smart Thermostat then you have the capability to set specific schedules to let the system adjust based on occupancy and use of separate zones in your home as well. You may also have a security system installed in your home, this is another form of building automation. These systems can be programmed to turn on lights, lock and unlock doors, and even alert you in the event that someone is at the door. All of these devices are constantly performing simple checks and balances in order to perform these tasks. Most people don’t even think of these things as automated systems but they truly are. Modern technology allows us to use these components easily and even log on and check them when we are away from home. Just think if you had to go to the furnace each time you felt a bit chilly and manually start it or turn on the air conditioner when you felt too warm. Your thermostat takes care of sending the signal to these units all on it own and for that you should be thankful.
