My mom and I were talking about what I wanted to do after graduation.
I told her about the job fair they held at the high school and how I talked to the HVAC technicians who were there representing the local HVAC company.
I said it sounded like a cool job, and I was interested in getting more information about HVAC technical school. Mom sat there, sipped her coffee, and asked what I wanted to know? I looked at her oddly and said I wanted to know how much there was to learn about heating and air conditioning. I didn’t even know what the HVAC stood for. She said that HVAC stood for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. They were the three principal components of the HVAC system. Without airflow, sometimes called ventilation, neither the furnace nor air conditioning unit worked properly. If you didn’t have airflow, the components in the furnace and the air conditioning unit broke. I looked at her and thought she must have had a lot of repairs done on the HVAC system for her to know all that. She reminded my grandfather owned the local HVAC company before he retired. Since she didn’t want to buy it from him, he sold it to her brother. I asked why she would want the HVAC company. She laughed and told me she was the first and best female HVAC technician in the state. I didn’t know if I wanted to be proud or shock to hear that my mother was an HVAC technician before I was born. She corrected me and said she was an HVAC technician until my little sister Rebecca was born. She was still a certified HVAC technician.
