The furnace looked like it should work.

I’m not an HVAC technician, but I have to admit that I have a pretty good eye.

I looked at the furnace when we bought the house, and I was sure it would work.

It looked brand new and wasn’t dusty. I guess that should have been my first warning, because when the furnace is in a dirt floored basement, it shouldn’t be immaculately clean. Like I said; I’m not an HVAC technician. I decided that, based on what I could see when looking at the furnace and AC unit, I shouldn’t need home inspections before we bought the house. Fast forward six months, and I was having problems with the furnace. When the HVAC technician arrived, he asked why the previous owners hadn’t had the furnace replaced before selling? He had been telling them for the past two years that the HVAC system needed replaced. He commented they had done an excellent job cleaning the ‘old girl’ up, but that didn’t make the furnace running any better. He asked if they had installed a new air conditioning unit? I shook my head, and he looked at me. He asked why I didn’t have the inspections done before buying the house? I told him the furnace looked like it should work. He told me his grandpa looked like he should work too, but that didn’t mean he should when he was almost ninety years old. I got the point and asked him for an estimate on a new HVAC system. He told me he would put in a call to the HVAC contractor, and he could be at the house that afternoon if he didn’t have a full schedule.
