Each year about this time, I’m snapped back to the reality that we do indeed live in a subtropical region.
I guess this should be something that I’m constantly aware of. But the fact that we enjoy such an incredible Winter, makes me sort of get lost a bit and forget about air conditioning for a while. But then again, the Winter is the only time that you don’t have to consider air conditioning around here. The heat pump basically takes the Winter off. And I basically try to spend as much time outside soaking up all the gorgeous weather. But then, we hit this time of year and it’s time to get back to all that cooling consideration. It’s not a trill but it’s also not something that in an unfamiliar mindset either. Each year, I have always done the basics when it comes to trying to ease the cost of the heat pump cooling the house. I get the air conditioning tune up each Spring. And then, I spend a weekend or two replacing worn weather stripping, sealing up gaps on the exterior and generally tightening up the house. Having a tight seal on the house is essential when it comes to any air conditioning strategy. But along with stopping direct sunlight heating and programming the digital thermostat, I like to add another level to the strategy each year. This year, I’m really going for it and my wife thinks I’m nuts. I have committed to doing all the cooking this summer outside. The grill is great and it’s right on the deck off the kitchen. This way, I don’t heat up the house by using the stove or the oven. I think this will save a big chunk on air conditioning costs.
