Chasing down the air conditioner repairman

Last July, I had a problem with my central air conditioner.

Without any warning whatsoever, it completely quit during the middle of the night.

I realized there was an issue when I woke up to an extremely overheated house. I fiddled with the thermostat, messed with the settings on the cooling unit and replaced the air filter. That is the extent of my troubleshooting knowledge and none of my efforts worked. I then called a local HVAC company and arranged a time for repair. They assured me that a licensed contractor would show up at the house between 10 AM and 2 PM. I was not thrilled about waiting around all day for air conditioner repair. I was forced to take the day off from work. The house was so hot and sticky that it was difficult to accomplish anything. I really wanted to get a workout but was reluctant to run on the treadmill in such overheated conditions. I waited around for the repairman until 3 o’clock. When he still hadn’t shown up, I assumed he wasn’t coming at all. I decided to go for a run outside. The temperature was up to 86 degrees, and my six mile run was excruciating. I was not happy that I was headed back to broken air conditioner. As I jogged up my street, I saw the HVAC service van pulling out of my driveway. The repairman had finally shown up, knocked on the door and realized nobody was home. There was no way I could let him leave without fixing my air conditioner. Despite my exhaustion, I sprinted down the road, waving my arms and shouting at the HVAC van. Fortunately, I was able to flag him down.
