My dad just died.
I just noticed that the HVAC clicked on again.
It feels a bit weird but, I suppose that would be normal. We were close, especially the last several years. He was a very gentle man and a real hard ass all at once. I certainly appreciate all the ways he was because he was quite unique. So, he left me his house. This was a very unexpected turn of events. There was no way I was expecting anything more than a solid handshake from my dad. He was always there in a pinch but he was no charity. I can respect that. Now, I am to decide whether I want to live in that house or not. The thing needs work. First thing to go is the ancient heating and cooling methods. This house was built in the late 30’s and is a subtle masterpiece. It will stand for the rest of time. But the HVAC is basically nonexistent based on today’s standards. There is this giant boiler in the basement for heat. I like that type of heat but, the costs are not sustainable. Plus, there is basically no air conditioning. I think there are like 3 window units in the house. They were only turned on during the hottest weeks of the year. So, I decided to meet with an HVAC contractor to see what my HVAC options are. I understand that the newer technologies allow for some very practical, yet creative heating and cooling plans. Perhaps just getting the HVAC information will help me get close to a decision on what to do with the house. It is a cool house and I could totally see myself living there. Thanks Dad.
