Height of Summer Brings Energy Savings Opportunity

So here we are again.

  • It’s the height of summer and we are all just trying to get through it.

None of us want to go from our HVAC controlled office to the car because we know we’ll be a pool of sweat by the time we get the car cooled off. I even clear my entire garage out this time of year so I can simply pull the car in the garage to slip inside the house without working up a sweat. It gets really hot where I live and most of us spend the summer looking to dodge the heat or find somewhere cool to rest. I can’t even imagine how those women and men work outside all day during the summer. I’d make it at one of those jobs maybe to lunch. And, I wouldn’t bet on that. The other tough part about summer is all the money we spend on electricity. The culprit being the HVAC unit attempting to keep our homes nice and cool. Some of these bills are just outrageous. I started doing something to bring that number down. First, I spent maybe 3 hours shoring up the house. I sealed up every single gap or hole I could find on the outside of my home. I then did the same thing inside for any crack that might allow HVAC treated air to leak outside. Then, I started pushing up the thermostat a bit. We have a programmable thermostat so it keeps it a bit warmer during the day while we’re at work. I started leaving the temperature up a bit more instead of lowering it immediately when I got home. Pretty simple stuff really.
