How many years will the air conditioning unit last?

When I bought a new air conditioning unit for my house, I had a lot of questions I wanted answered.

They tried to sell me an extended warranty the day I bought the AC unit.

They asked me if I wanted a maintenance agreement and told me what it was going to cost. They wanted to offer many add-ons to extend the warranty, but I wanted my questions answered first. I wanted to know exactly what the warranty covered, and how long I had to purchase the extended warranty. If the extended warranty for the AC unit didn’t go into effect until the original warranty ended, why was I being pressured to buy it the day the AC unit was installed? I also wanted to know why I needed a maintenance agreement, if the warranty included maintenance, at least for the first year. I also wanted to know how long the central air conditioning unit would last. The HVAC technician started answering my questions, but he started with the easy one. He said if I had regular maintenance done on the air conditioning unit, and changed the air filters as recommended, the AC unit would last at least fifteen years. He said the maintenance agreement would help keep the warranty intact by giving me two years of maintenance on the entire HVAC system. It also covered the cost of repairs and small parts needed when the maintenance was done. I asked if they included the air filters with the maintenance agreement. He smiled and told me to ask nicely, and he would give me a free case of air filters for the HVAC system for the two years of the maintenance agreement.
