I needed a dehumidifier for my new beach house

Just like I had hoped, the dehumidifier lowered our humidity level in our house by nearly 10%

My wife and I both retired in the last few years. Fortunately, we had a generous savings account on top of multiple pensions. Even though we’re financially set for the rest of our lives, I feel restless some days. I go hiking or take long bike rides but it’s not enough to keep my brain active. Before long, I was thinking about starting a business or getting another job. Thankfully my wife stepped in and helped me snap out of it. She asked me to take my energy and apply it to fixing our house and making whatever improvements I can that aren’t a risk to my health at my age. Obviously I can lift slabs of marble to replace the countertops, but I can easily repaint the fence outside and build shelves in our bedroom. I also inspect our home to make sure nothing is malfunctioning, and one constant area of concern is our central heating and cooling system. For whatever reason, it’s not keeping the humidity level below 60% inside the house, regardless of how often we run the air conditioner. Before getting a new HVAC system, I went to the hardware store and purchased a dehumidifier. These machines are only $250 and that is a mere fraction of the cost of a new central air conditioner. Just like I had hoped, the dehumidifier lowered our humidity level in our house by nearly 10%. That might not seem significant, but in terms of indoor humidity that’s a huge drop. If you’re just above 60% humidity, that will get you closer to 50% and at a moisture level where it’s much harder for mold and fungal spores to grow.
