Ever since I was a kid, I have always had a fascination with old movies.
I love black and white movies because it gives me a glimpse into the lives of people that are not like me.
One of the things that I think is interesting about these movies is that their HVAC units are completely different. First of all, none of these people had air conditioners. I am not sure how they remained happy without an air conditioner, but they seemed to do just fine without it. Instead of having furnaces or other types of normal heating systems, everyone had fireplaces to keep their houses warm. One of the interesting things that I see while watching these movies is that they always turned off their heating system before they went to bed. I always thought that it was very strange. Without their heating system, everyone would have to wear thick pajamas and would have heavy blankets to keep them warm. I began to wonder why we couldn’t turn off our heating systems like that. Surely, by turning off our heating systems at night, we would save a lot of money on our monthly bills. Then, I suddenly realized it. They could turn off their heating systems because they didn’t have running water in their house. By having running water in our house, we managed to ensure that our heating systems would always stay running. WIthout our heating systems now, all of our water pipes would freeze! Still, I am glad that our heating systems are on at night because I would imagine that the rest of the house would be cold without it.
