Now that I have been living in the south for a few months I have started to learn just how important it is to have different ways to stay cool.
It’s important to stay cool and comfortable no matter where you are in the world, but in the south it is downright critical in my opinion.
Prior to when I moved down here I thought that all I would need to be happy while living here is a proper air conditioning unit and some good friends. When you are actually living in the south however, you will quickly find that feeling stuck in your home all day will leave you feeling extremely homesick. Having air conditioning in your house sure is important, but having other places in town that you can have a good time at while also staying cooled off is important. For example, despite how hot it gets here nearly two thirds of the gyms in the city I live in don’t have air conditioning installed. The majority of the gyms around here try to use this lack of AC as a marketing tactic for how it helps make you “tough”. I don’t know about anyone else, but when I go to the gym I am looking to tone my muscles, not have a heat stroke. Finding the right gym for you will help you stay cool and comfortable while also letting you explore more of the city and make new friends. Libraries are also great places to check out when moving to a new place, as they have free AC 99% of the time, and plenty of smart people prefer to hang out there. Staying cooled off is crucial, but knowing where to go to make friends and explore is just as important.
