Living in remote area makes furnace upkeep important

I live in a very remote area surrounded by woods.

I see all types of wildlife from my windows, including deer, foxes, coyotes, rabbits, squirrels and on one occasion, a bear.

There isn’t another house for thirty miles in any direction. There is only a dirt road leading to my house. I appreciate the peace, quiet and privacy. I am located in the upper northern area of the country. The winter weather is the main concern, with the outside temperatures often plummeting down to twenty below zero. It’s not unusual for me to get trapped inside the house because of the cold and accumulation of snow. The wind chill creates dangerous conditions. I rely heavily on my gas furnace and make sure to take very good care of it. I need to be certain the heating system can handle the severe weather and will operate reliably for up to eight straight months. There are times when the roads become impassable due to ice and white-outs. An HVAC contractor wouldn’t be able to reach my home to provide a repair, and I couldn’t manage without heat. I schedule preventative maintenance for the furnace every fall. I have a licensed technician check out the heating system and provide any necessary replacement parts, cleaning or tuning. I keep a supply of air filters on hand, and I’ve invested in backup generator. In the event of a power failure, the generator will automatically start up and allow me to continue to run the furnace, lights, water heater and all of my vital appliances.
