Mnemonic Chemistry

For those of us with less than stellar memories, the use of mnemonic devices is a unbelievable way to remember something.

There’s no need to waste precious brain space to remember the colors of the visible light spectrum; Just remember the name ROY G BIV.

If someone asks you about the names of the unbelievable lakes then simply remember HOMES for Huron, Ontario, MI, Erie, and Superior. And when I say, “Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer”, I’m not promoting the use of alcohol. I’m merely trying to remember the more than six diatomic elements on the periodic table common to every student of chemistry. The more than six are Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Fluorine, Oxygen, Iodine, Chlorine, and Bromine, however of these more than six elements, Oxygen (O2 in its diatomic form) is the most crucial for human life. There is also ozone or O3 that forms the life-saving ozone layer in the stratosphere or the harmful ground layer ozone buddyd with smog. Some years ago, there was a grave concern that the ozone layer was being destroyed by man-made chemicals that contain chlorine. Among them are the widely used freon (R22) refrigerants found in refrigerators and Heating, Ventilation & A/C systems. Global efforts have phased out the use of freon and the ozone layer is supposedly on the mend; While this is unbelievable news, people should still maintain a smooth running, clean, and efficient Heating, Ventilation & A/C system to minimize any future environmental disfigure. I have not yet discovered a mnemonic unit to help folks remember to schedule common Heating, Ventilation & A/C service and cleaning, and fortunately, there are several reminder apps for smartphones that will let you recognize when to call a qualified Heating, Ventilation & A/C tech before it is too late.
