I wasn’t surprised when the power went out in my office yesterday, but I was disappointed. The weather channel had been calling for severe thunderstorms, so I had anticipated that the electricity would have a power outage. This office building always loses power during high winds and severe storms, probably because the building is so old. Whenever the power goes out, we’re forced to work in the dark and without heat and air. Our boss always gives us the freedom to leave, but if the power goes out, it’s usually because of a bad storm and it’s not wise to actually leave. A few hours after I arrived, the lights began to flicker and the sky became really dark. This is when I knew that the storm was about to hit and that I was going to lose power shortly in my office. I quickly began to charge my computer and cell phone and did as much work as I could before the inevitable. When the power finally went out, the temperature of the office dropped significantly. The building was so poorly insulated that the hat escaped quickly in situations like this. Since the power went out so often, a lot of employees kept a blanket at their desks for situations like this. I love my job, but we really need a new office because the lack of HVAC system during the power outages is really affecting my productivity. If we can’t get a new office, we could at least benefit from a gas furnace.
