Well, the time has come for me to make air conditioning a through the day occurrence. It’s now hitting the mid 90’s on just about a daily basis so the HVAC cooling is on for the duration of the summer. But the way we approach air conditioning is a bit more of a less is more type situation. When the temperatures start poking around the 80’s in late March, we don’t go right for the thermostat. Instead, we try to keep the windows open and simply let our bodies get accustomed to the rising heat and humidity. On the spring days where it stays warmer longer, we might kick on the HVAC cooling in the evening before bed just to cool off the house. Outside of that, we just try to stay away from over cooling the house. This is a strategy that works well for us. Where we live, there are four months of the year where the outside temperatures sit just right around the 100 degree mark. But when you are deep into air conditioning early, it makes that heat seem even that much more unbearable. The answer is to acclimate to the heat before the summer gets here. That way, when the house is in the 80’s during the day, it feels much cooler than the near hundred degree heat outside. Not only does this approach make the summer much more manageable but it saves us a ton on HVAC cooling costs. But now, it appears summer is upon us and we’ll be needing more HVAC cooling through the day. That’s okay and it’s all just part of managing the heat in this region.
