It was definitely a worthwhile investment
We waited quite a few years before installing central air conditioning into our home. Our location in the northwestern part of the country means exceptionally long and cold winters with short summers. We typically rely on the furnace for six to eight months per year and see temperatures down to negative twenty five. Despite the brevity of the summer eason, we sometimes experience temperatures in the upper eighties and high humidity. Just as frequently, the whole summer is cloudy, chilly and wet. We managed by installing window air conditioners in the bedrooms and electric box fans in the rest of the house. The portable air conditioners cost less than $200 a piece and were super simple to install. The investment in a central air conditioner seemed unnecessary. However, when my oldest daughter was diagnosed with asthma and severe allergies, we needed to make some changes. Suddenly, indoor air quality was a major priority and dusting and vacuuming wasn’t enough. We needed to take more proactive measures. Shutting the windows to keep out bugs, pollen, exhaust fumes and exterior pollution was a good start. Adding a central cooling system not only helps to maintain a comfortable temperature but works to circulate and filter the air. I also make an effort to replace the air filters more frequently. I am surprised by how often we use the air conditioner. Even when the conditions aren’t especially hot or humid, running the cooling system keeps the whole house fresher, cleaner and more comfortable. It was definitely a worthwhile investment. I spent extra for a higher efficiency model to keep operating costs as low as possible.
