I was futzing around in the basement last week, and I found two boxes of air filters. One box was furnace air filters, and the other was for the air conditioning unit. I wondered why we had full boxes of air filters in the basement, so I went upstairs to ask mom. She looked at me like I was crazy and asked if I was sure? I showed her the boxes, and she said they had bought a couple years ago. She now wondered what dad had been using all this time, when he changed the air filters. When dad got home from work that evening, mom said nothing about the air filters, but she was being extra nice to him. After he finished eating, she said she had something to talk to him about. He smiled, and she asked what air filters he had been using in the furnace and air conditioning unit? He stuttered for a moment and said he used the ones in the basement. He had to replace them because they were all out. My eyes must have grown super wide because he sat back down even though he had just stood up. Mom told him he needed to stay sat and asked him when was the last time he had changed an air filter. I almost laughed when he asked her if she thought all he did was nothing. He worked for a living, made sure the lawn got mowed and did all the chores she put on his honey-do list. She told him he needed to show me how to change the air filters. She would not use her money to repair a furnace or air conditioning because he didn’t think changing an air filter was important.
