When my sister and I were in middle school, my parents and I noticed a change in my sister’s health.
- She was always out of breath and it sounded like she was struggling to breathe, even if we were sitting on the couch watching TV.
Since the two of us shared a room, I noticed the constant coughing throughout the night. It seemed like she was always waking up to a coughing fit that sometimes led to wheezing and chest grabbing. In the beginning, our mom thought my sister was coming down with a cold or bronchitis. She took her to the doctor, only to find out that she actually had asthma. Nobody in our family had ever had asthma before, so we didn’t know what to do to help her. Besides carrying an inhaler, the doctor recommended that we pay extra close attention to our HVAC air filters and to invest in a portable air purifier. Switching out the air filter for our HVAC system regularly would keep all the air coming in through the air vents and spreading throughout the house, clean and fresh. The air purifier would be useful for my sister specifically, because it was portable and could be moved from room to room. The air purifier could trap any extra dust or debri floating around in the air that the air filter didn’t pick up, putting out more clean air. Even though I didn’t have asthma myself, I noticed a difference in the air quality in our room after we added the air purifier. I also noticed that my sister wasn’t experiencing coughing fits in the evening anymore!
