Professional air conditioner maintenance doesn’t go well

I’m very conscientious about the upkeep of the home and all the related equipment.

  • I know that by taking good care of my investment, everything will provide greater reliability and last longer.

I take the time to clean the gutters, caulk around windows and sharpen the blades on the lawn mower. I regularly drain the hot water tank and clean the dryer vent, faucet aerators and vacuum cleaner. Being handy and having access to a wide range of tools allows me to handle the upkeep of everything from our vehicles to the furnace and air conditioner. I’ve always handled the adjustment, cleaning and necessary upkeep of the heating and cooling system. We’ve never had any major repairs or complaints with comfort. However, a few months ago, my wife read a blog about the importance of maintenance performed by a licensed HVAC professional. She insisted that we needed to hire a certified contractor to service the air conditioner. I argued against it, but she went ahead with it anyway. The technician arrived two hours late for the appointment, took the air conditioner apart and spent an hour fiddling with it. Before he started, our cooling system was working perfectly. When he finished, the equipment wouldn’t start up at all. He then informed us that the system needed to be entirely replaced. I refused but unfortunately, I couldn’t repair whatever damage he’d caused. We ended up calling for a second opinion. The second contractor confirmed that the air conditioner was beyond repair. We then had no option but to invest in the installation of a whole new cooling system.
