As a single mother with two young daughters, I cannot be too careful.
The country, and our neighborhood, is as safe as it has ever been, and yet still we have to protect ourselves at all times.
I have always raised my daughters to be self reliant and self aware, to take stock of their surroundings, and to keep a keen eye on strangers. It isn’t that I am distrustful of men, I am just well aware of my own vulnerability, and that of my kids. I tell you all this by way of explanation, so you understand why I wouldn’t let the HVAC repair tech into my house. He seemed pleasant enough, but I had not met him, nor had I ever done business with his A/C repair company before. I called the office of the AC company while he waited outside, and told them I wanted a female tech to come over. They said they had no female HVAC technicians on staff, and that the man they sent was perfectly qualified. I told them this had nothing to do with qualifications, but my own feelings of safety, and then called a different HVAC company. I had to talk to three different business owners before I found one that had a female HVAC tech on staff. The girl was new, and still in training, but I gladly accepted and within an hour she was inspecting my central air conditioning. She did a perfectly acceptable job and I told her boss the HVAC contractor I would gladly use her again in the future.
