A bad thunderstorm ruined our furnace

Last night, we had a terrible thunderstorm outside of our house.

The lights were flickering, and we were afraid that we were going to lose power completely.

All of a sudden, the electricity surged one last time, and all of the power went out. After a few minutes, the power came back on, but not everything was working again. We realized that we had lost the power to our furnace. It was late fall, so it wasn’t cold enough to freeze to death, but it definitely was too cold to be comfortable without a furnace. I quickly called an HVAC technician, and he promised that he would be out in a few days. Apparently, there were a lot of people with broken furnaces, and every HVAC company in town was working tirelessly to fix the HVAC units. When the HVAC technician showed up, he told us that it was very likely that a power surge had destroyed the motor that runs the furnace. If that was the case, then he would have to order the part for the furnace online and wait to install it until it came into the shop. Apparently, the power surge had done the same thing to most of the furnaces in town. It turned out that the HVAC technician was right, and we had to order a new part for our furnace. After a few days, the HVAC technician got our furnace running again, and we were grateful. Those couple of days without a furnace were miserable, and we couldn’t wait to have warm air in our house again. The HVAC technician charged us a lot of money, but warm air is definitely worth it.
