A better toilet

I currently have a toilet that makes a screech; It still functions but I’m worried about getting into a very exhausting situation. I’ve noticed that I now need to hold the handle down and count slowly to 12 to get the toilet to completely flush, and about 50% of the time, not everything disappears with a single flush. I occasionally need to wait for the toilet to quit running and then flush a bit later, then this process is wasting a tremendous amount of water. I am hoping to avoid scheduling a repair with a professional plumber if possible. I can’t undoubtedly afford the time or money involved however going separate from a toilet isn’t an option. I need to address the malfunctioning toilet as soon as possible. I’ve done some research into how to handle the problem on my own. A google article told me to check the water level in the toilet tank. I removed the cover, looked inside and found a marked indicator for the water line. It looked good to me, although I went ahead and adjusted the float anyway. The float is a rubber ball supported by a metal arm. I was able to use a screwdriver to turn a screw and elevate the float a bit. This adjustment didn’t solve the problems. The next troubleshooting option was the toilet flapper or rubber seal that plugs a hole at the bottom of the tank. Any damage to the flapper can cause water to leak out of the tank. There can also be a problem with the flapper chain being too long or too short. I fiddled around with that for a while and accomplished nothing. I’ve now decided that I should invest in a current toilet. The existing toilet was in place when I bought the house over several years ago, however rather than waste money on an upscale repair, I would like to have a new, more energy efficient option installed.
