Helping neighbor with HVAC issue

I grew up in a neighborhood.

My parents were working class folks who did all they could do to provide for their kids.

And, I think that we all turned out pretty good. We didn’t have a bunch of luxury in our home. Yet, there was always good food, clothes and quality heating and air. My dad was particularly proud of the fact that he had a home with central air conditioning. He grew up in a situation where the wasn’t much residential HVAC to speak of at all. So having great heating and cooling equipment was a big deal for him. And while he was so good at fixing just about anything, he didn’t mess with the HVAC unit. And HVAC maintenance or repair was always done by the capable HVAC professionals. Dad also taught me how to be a good neighbor. I don’t think he actually meant to teach me this quality but it rubbed off apparently. My family lives in a much more affluent situation. Honestly, I’m still not sure that’s better than the way I grew up. We live in a gated community where there is an HOA and their rules. I’m currently being a good neighbor to the lady next door who appears to be getting harassed by the HOA simply because the HVAC unit faded. I’m talking about the HVAC cabinet outside of her house. The HVAC equipment is still in great working order but the HOA is demanding that she replace it. I’m a lawyer and I just don’t think I can take that sort of abuse of authority to an elderly lady without doing something.
