Being an HVAC technician stinks.
It honestly does.
Now that I have been an HVAC technician for a substantial amount of time, I can honestly tell you that I would rather be anything besides an HVAC technician. When I first started training as an HVAC technician, it seemed like a dream. I could completely bypass any need for a student loan because the trade school would pay me to train to become a certified HVAC technician. Since HVAC units are in nearly every home in America, I would never have to worry about there not being a need for my skills. On the contrary, HVAC technicians are in high demand. I would also be enabled to fix my own HVAC units, which would save me a lot of money. However, they never told me that customers would dread having to pay me for my services when I repair their furnaces and air conditioners. I picked this job because I wanted to help people be comfortable by fixing their HVAC units, but they never see my services as helpful. Instead, they mumble and complain when I give them a bill. Can’t they understand that I have a family and that fixing an HVAC unit is not simple? They also never told me how uncomfortable and difficult it is to install a new furnace or air conditioner during the middle of winter in a house that we are building. My job is difficult, miserable, and unappreciated. All I hope is that I will be able to hold out until I can retire.
