I turned on the air conditioning and sat there for a minute
Last summer, we had a tornado go through our area. I was in the grocery store when the tornado warning sirens started going off. We could hear the wind whistling through the building and the rain was hitting so hard that we feared the glass was going to break. Two minutes later, the lights went out in the store. I was standing in the middle of an aisle and had an idea where I was, but some people simply stood still until the emergency lighting came on. Without lights, there was no AC and I could feel the heat coming off other people in the aisle. I could feel the call of the freezer section, and I headed toward the cooler air. While waiting for the lights to come back on, I stood near the freezer section. I didn’t have air conditioning, so I wanted the next big thing. Once the emergency lighting came on, they were telling people to bag their grocery and go home. Anyone who had a cart got their groceries for free. Once I got outside, I hurried to put my groceries in the car before it started raining again. I turned on the air conditioning and sat there for a minute. I wondered if the storm had headed toward my house and if I would have power when I got home. I had several things that needed frozen, and without power or air conditioning, I wouldn’t be able to keep anything cool. I knew I could shove groceries in the freezer and fridge and they would be safe for twenty-four hours, but I was stuck without air conditioning, and nothing could help that.
