This past year, we didn’t get much of a summer.
After a very long and especially cold and snowy winter, I was really looking forward to some warm weather.
Unfortunately, we still had snow on the ground at Easter. We were still turning on the furnace at night during the month of May. The outside temperature remained chilly throughout all of June. Since my husband and I had just made the investment into a central cooling system the year before, we weren’t happy. We started to wonder if we’d wasted our money. There was definitely no need for a whole-home air conditioner. It was barely warm enough to open the windows. For the entire summer, I think we used our air conditioner less than 10 times. I felt that paying a professional for preventative maintenance was pointless. The weather finally started to warm up a bit during the fall. It was also very damp outside and the house felt clammy. I decided to use the air conditioner strictly to circulate the indoor air. Rather than having it cooling the house, I simply kept the fan running. Because the air conditioner kept the air moving, it felt much fresher and cleaner. It also helped with that sticky feeling and musty smells. The filter trapped airborne contaminants such as dust, dander, pollen and other allergens. My whole family was more comfortable and slept much better. I kept the central cooling system’s fan working until the outside temperature dropped and it was time to rely on the furnace. While I’m certainly hopeful that we get a long, hot summer next year, I am satisfied that installing a central air conditioner was worthwhile.
