Early on in my hospitality career, I worked exclusively for resorts. It was a great way to live if you love people, like to work lots of hours and do a fair amount of traveling. And back then, that’s exactly what I loved to do. I was not your go to work, punch out and then sit in the air conditioning watching TV all night. More action was what I was looking for back then. And due to the nature of the resort business, I would often move from a winter resort to a sunny spot and vice versa as demand warranted. This was always a shock to my system because I just couldn’t get accustomed to being inside with the gas furnace cranking to keep warm. But still, it was the business that I loved. All the action, whether it was somewhere with gas furnace heating or lots of HVAC cooling, was what I was chasing. Well, that changed once I got married and settled down to have a family. I also stayed put more and got more into upper management. But the relocation really never stops in this business. And after all those years, I’m back managing a winter resort. But just like before, I have a really hard time getting accustomed to all this gas furnace heating in the winter. I find myself wondering if we made the right call by taking this job. Our kids are still pretty young and they just adore the snow and the resort. My wife has her mom and dad hardly an hour away. Plus, she loves the gas furnace heating. So, I guess it’s going to be me that’s the one who will ultimately have to figure out his own internal thermostat.
