The duct system is the cause of air quality problems

I recently had some concerns over the health of the air quality in my home.

I noticed that there was a lot more dust and other debris floating around in the air and settling on surfaces.

It was necessary to vacuum and dust more frequently. There was always an unpleasant, musty odor that I couldn’t get rid of. My whole family often started sneezing when the furnace kicked on. I was waking up in the morning with headaches. When I realized that my heating bills were much higher than usual, I assumed the problems were because of the furnace. I scheduled a service appointment with a local HVAC contractor. A technician came to the house and performed a thorough inspection and cleaning of the heater. He then checked out the duct system and found a significant buildup of contaminants concealed inside. The accumulation was blocking airflow and forcing the furnace to run longer. It was struggling to keep up with demand on especially cold nights. The contractor recommended having the duct system professionally cleaned. He brought in a piece of equipment that looked a lot like an industrial sized vacuum cleaner. There was an extremely long hose with a brush on the end. The brush worked to remove stubborn debris which was then sucked up into the hose. The whole process was completed in about an hour. There was no mess or damage and a significant improvement in the performance of the furnace. My home now stays far cleaner and smells better. I feel a lot better about the air quality of my home.
