Use Your Head with HVAC During the Summer Heat

Living in an are where just trying to keep cool is the main task of the day, gets old after awhile.

The South is such a great place to live but man, the summer gets rough.

Even the lizards are looking for shade. It’s so hot that my cat won’t even muster the energy needed to jump the fence. While we all face the same fate during the hot summer, many of us approach it very differently. I have friends and neighbors who just pay whatever they have to pay to stay cool during the summer. The hotter it gets, the deeper they go with the thermostat setting. Their HVAC systems run just non stop. I would not want to write that check. I also know people who will actually cut the A/C off for long periods of time. One neighbor turns off the HVAC cooling system when she is away at work. There is another neighbor who turns off the HVAC system the entire time he and his family are away on vacation. I see the logic but they are forgetting a key element of what HVAC actually does. The HVAC cooling system is removing heat from the home not just blowing cooler air. As the HVAC is working to remove the heat, it is also drying out the air. This allows the HVAC to balance the humidity in the home. Without the A/C running during the height of summer, the house becomes a perfect environment for mold & mildew. Simply paying attention to where the thermostat is set relative to the outside temp is a happy medium between these two extremes.
